本實驗室的研究圍繞著「破解記憶儲存」為主,從基因到蛋白質功能,從單一神經元結構的資料庫到整體神經網路,延伸出了許多面向的研究主題。動物在演化與發育的過程中,透過學習與記憶的機制,在自然環境中得以生存下來。約一百年前,人類開始系統性的研究究竟記憶是如何產生和儲存。隨著知識的累積與科技的發展,科學家們,包括本實驗室,已經在各種動物模型中找到了記憶儲存的位置,甚至改變這些記憶的表現。在取得長足進展的現代神經科學領域,關於「學習與記憶」仍然有許多的未知。本實驗室長久以來一直使用著許多古典與最新的技術,在破解記憶儲存的這條道路上邁進。

About the Lab

We aim to understand the genetic and neural basis of brain functions in Drosophila. Our missions are: (i) to construct a wiring diagram of the entire fly brain; and (ii) to understand the design of individual circuits for both innate and learned behaviors.

Wiring Diagram.

We have generated a standard Drosophila brain for archiving and analysis of 3D images of individual neurons. We are currently constructing (i) a connectome map showing connections amongst all brain regions; and (ii) an activity map showing internal representation and neuron-to-neuron translation of olfactory associated experiences. We are also interested in applying the state-of-art imaging technologies for mapping human connectome.

Brain Functions.

Our focus is on understanding circuits and genes involved in olfactory, auditory, gustatory, sleep, courtship, fear, and learned behaviors. Our long-term goal is to construct a dynamic memory connectome of the small Drosophila brain as the basis for the development of Augmented Intelligence.

Research Interests

We aim to understand how genes and circuits orchestrate complex behavior in Drosophila.Three main approaches are taken: (i) to construct a brain-wide wiring diagram at single-cell resolution; (ii) to manipulate specific nodes in the circuits to understand how the brain encodes and decodes information; and (iii) to develop innovative technologies for functional connectomic research.
